The Declining Global Vision Why is Everyone Wearing Glasses?

4 Billion people have eye defects and need some kind of visual aids. That is, 4 out of 7 people wear glasses. And with an enormous number of ageing population in most countries, the number of people needing visual assistance is rising.

As you cross 40, you are dogged with many different eye conditions. Your high cholesterol levels are affecting your heart, other crucial organs and also your eyes. If you have an unhealthy lifestyle, you will have vision issues from early on.

What are the causes of an increased number of glasses wearers?

  1. Changed Lifestyle
  2. Increased Screen Time
  3. Ageing Population
  4. Unhealthy Diet
  5. Stress and Anxiety

Changed Lifestyle

From the last decade to this one, the lifestyle has changed a lot. You can surely see more people with glasses now than you did at the beginning of the millennia. You can think back to your school days when you were the only one who used prescription glasses. The other children would tease you by asking how many fingers can you see. That’s so cliche and unfunny. If someone still does that, you can say to their face that they should try harder with their humour.

And now, when you are working, you spot more people with glasses and most of them with much worse eyesight than you. If you work on computers or work in a software company, you can spot many glasses wearers. And even those who do not wear glasses might wear contacts.

For this, you can blame the lifestyle. This era is always in a hurry. We don’t have time to stop and breathe. We are running to make ends meet, achieve deliverables within the deadline.

Increased Screen Time

In the 80s, the only people who used computers for work were software engineers, analysts, and a few more who knew how to use the computer. But with the advancements, you do not need to learn how the internet works or how the computer works. You can go through it by simply clicking. And then add the ever-so convenient smartphones. You don’t have to scroll or click, you can give a voice command, and you can get your task done.

It is so easy to use that even toddlers use them. And this has led to the increasing menace of computer vision syndrome.

It is common to find people bend on their digital devices. If you add up all the time you spend on all the devices, you will be surprised that it is alarmingly high. You only keep your phone aside when you are sleeping. On average, a regular adult spends about 11 hours on their devices.

You can alleviate the symptoms of computer vision syndrome by wearing computer glasses. These glasses ease your vision when you work on the computer.

Ageing Population

You must have about Elon Musk talking about population collapse. Well, whether that would happen is highly unlikely. But we do know that the demographics of most of the countries is ageing. And ageing brings a lot of health issues. And most devastating of it is weakening vision.

Glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases can cause partial or full blindness.

After 40, you are prone to get one or the other eye defect. Presbyopia is the most common of all. You can start wearing varifocal glasses that aid your vision at all distances. Even better, these glasses give you comfortable eyesight. You do not have to strain your neck or back to see clearly.

Unhealthy Diet

Needless to say, there are too many adulterants and not too healthy food in the market. You might have heard the news about a certain famous brand that 60 per cent of their food products are unhealthy. But we are too habituated to leave those products and shift to substitutes which are also not that healthy.

Many have shifted to entirely vegan or organic foods. But these diet choices are too expensive. And opting for these choices need more than a flexible budget.

Stress and Anxiety

People are more stressed now than they were in old ages. There were issues too in the past, like world wars, famine, plague. People were anxious and stressed then too. But we are living in the 21st century, and we are stressed. There must be more stressful situations then, but we are more bothered by the issues like job security, paying back student debt and getting a suitable marriage partner. (Or if the marriage should even be considered).

And all this stress and anxiety impacts your health and even your vision.

If you see the world through the muddy lenses, you will see everything blur.
